HDR Workshop

AN HDR WORKSHOP AND FIELD TRIP WITH DAVE McKANE

Limited spaces - click here to book now

HDR (or High Dynamic Range) is an exciting new way to take and process photographs. The effects can be used to great effect on single photos or, better yet, processed using a series of exposure bracketed shots ranging from very dark to very bright. The idea of HDR is to extend the range of detail that a single photo can capture.

Learn key camera techniques

Through Dave’s examples of his own HDR photography from around the world, you will learn how to research and identify special locations that are likely to result in great HDR shots. You will also learn the professional photographer’s tips and techniques on how to set the camera up to ensure you get properly exposure bracketed shots, even if your camera doesn't have Auto Exposure Bracketing.

Learn great post processing tips in the computer

No great HDR shot is complete without a little bit of post-processing in the computer afterwards. In this unique masterclass you will learn key techniques when creating and manipulating HDR files in Photomatix, including control of the excessive noise that is a feature of the HDR process. You will also learn important tips for further processing in Photoshop/Elements.

In this special masterclass you will also learn about how to create stunning black and whites in HDR, something most users of HDR are simply not aware of.

Topics covered

During this unique masterclass you will learn key elements of HDR photography including how to:

  • Research and identify great HDR locations
  • Take control of the key camera settings for HDR including Auto Exposure Bracketing using continuous shooting to minimise the time lag between shots (important in limiting cloud movement)
  • Use and manipulate Raw files to control key exposure and white balance settings
  • Control Chromatic Aberration (the red and purple fringing that occurs with many wide angle lenses)
  • Use Photomatix HDR software at an advanced level
  • Use masks and layers in Photoshop/Elements to bring out all the important detail in your shots
  • Use special distortion correction tricks to minimise converging parallels on tall buildings
  • Use Noise reduction to control the excessive noise that HDR introduces to your shots
  • You are encouraged to bring you own laptop along if it has any version of Photoshop or Photoshop Elements on it (if you don't have the software you can download a free 30 day trial at www.adobe.com/downloads. A small number of laptops can be supplied with Photoshop Elements installed
  • Dave will be supplying some of his images so you can practise using the special post processing techniques that he will be demonstrating
  • A special on-location discussion will take place immediately after the workshop where only participants from this workshop will get detailed direction from Dave as to how to set up your equipment to ensure you get some great shots

Refreshements

Tea/coffee and biscuits will be available for you on arrival at the Institute, along with the usual friendly welcome!

Field Trip

Attendees will partipicate in a special HDR Photography Shoot held immediately after the Workshop.
