ABOUT THE PHOTOGRAPHER
O. Winston Link was an American photographer who is best known for his black & white photography capturing the last days of steam locomotive in the United States in the late 1950s. He was a pioneer of night photography, producing several well known examples including Hotshot Eastbound, a photograph of a steam train passing a drive-in movie theater and Hawksbill Creek Swimming Hole showing a train crossing a bridge above children bathing. Link was the original creator of off-camera flash, using miles of wire and huge banks of flash lights to light up the trains at night. This was a time before electronic flash guns so the only option was to use once-off. magnesium flash bulbs. Once the they fired they could not be used again. Link even went on to custom build his own flash equipment.

ABOUT THE SCREENING
'Trains That Passed In The Night' is a 1990 documentary film that follows O. Winston Link during his late 70’s while he revisits scenes of his most iconic photographs that were taken on the N&W line between 1955 and 1960. Link, and others involved in this project, discusses the belief that his work documented not only the end of steam but the way of life in Rural America.

Immediately after the screening we will be holding an all encompassing discussion about photography, the universe and everything. The discussion will be led by the principal of the Institute of Photography, Dave McKane.

Free coffee, tea and biscuits will be available before and after the screening.
